Axel Elian Zhang, or Zhāng Xī (张西), was born in 2006 in Guangzhou, China. His father, Elian Zhang, or Zhāng Weiran (张维然), is a Chinese professor at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, while his mother, Claire Lim (林嘉慧), is Singaporean and works as a marketing consultant. Both were good parents, but they had very different personalities and views on life. His father was strict and traditional, while his mother was more relaxed and open-minded. Their differences often led to arguments, and after years of realizing that they simply were not very compatible, they decided to separate in 2012, when Axel was six years old.
After the divorce, Axel continued living in Guangzhou with his mother, until 2014. His mother then decided it was time for them to move to Singapore. Axel adjusted to the change without much trouble, and in 2016, his mother remarried. Life in his mother's new household was much more peaceful, and Axel gradually settled into his new family. In 2017, he gained a younger half-sibling, eleven years younger than him.
Despite the divorce, Axel has always had a good relationship with his father. Elian remained involved in his life, and the two continued to see each other regularly. Sometimes his father would visit him in Singapore, while at other times Axel would return to Guangzhou during school breaks. The distance never became much of an issue between them.
Axel has always been an easygoing kid. He can be a little quiet around people he has just met, but once he gets comfortable, he becomes much more talkative and playful. He likes going out, trying new things, and getting himself into little adventures with his friends. He is the type of person who rarely turns down an invitation to go somewhere, even if there is no particular plan.
After moving to Singapore, Axel settled into his new school and routine without much trouble. He kept his grades up without being particularly competitive and spent much of his free time with friends. He was active in school activities and generally enjoyed having things to do outside the classroom.
After graduating from school, Axel enrolled at the National University of Singapore (NUS), where he chose to study Environmental Studies. He had always been somewhat interested in the relationship between people, cities, and the environment, and the subject felt like something he could genuinely see himself enjoying without having to force a particular career path onto it.
University gave him a much wider social circle than he had been used to. He met people from different backgrounds, joined different groups, and slowly became more comfortable finding his place among them. His university years became a time when he was able to explore more of what he liked, meet new people, and say yes to things he probably would not have tried before. University brought new friendships, late-night conversations, spontaneous plans, and eventually the kind of feelings that were harder to brush off as just another friendship.
